“pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16).

Have you ever stopped to think about why we pray for others, however? Or why we ask prayer from others?

The best gift anyone can give to another is to pray for him or her, and praying for others is an important and wonderful ministry of love and obedience. Even when we ourselves cannot provide the help that others need, we know Someone who can! And it is our privilege and responsibility to bring the needs of others to Him. He is able to do far more than we can ever ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20) and He loves His people with an everlasting love.

We pray for others maybe out of compassion for them. We pray for others in order to change them. We pray for others because others ask us to pray. We pray for others because we are helpless, but God is not. We pray for others, because we also can benefit from God answering our prayer for others.

When we take the time to pray for others, something always happens.  Sometimes God pours grace and love into their lives. When we pray for others, we acknowledge the reality that God is responsible for the soul of another, and He lets us contribute! When we plead God for our needs we also need to remember about the needs of others. It's great to know that others may be stepping up for someone before God, but God wants you to stand in the gap, putting something of yourself on the line.

While some of us are gifted intercessors who spend a tremendous amount of time and effort in prayer, all of us are called to intercede for one another. We desire their good, we desire their growth: we desire their conversion and conformity to Christ, therefore, our hearts should always long for a prayer for them. Prayer is more than just love for our neighbour; it is giving God the power and glory that is his, as it is about loving our neighbour.

We can often obtain for others what they cannot for themselves. Abraham prayed for Abimelech, and obtained for him blessings, for which Abimelech's prayers might have been made in vain. Job prayed successfully for his friends and God heard him when he could not hear them. Moses, in like manner, prayed for Aaron and Miriam, and God's hearing him, when he could not hear them, became a loud rebuke of their envy and pride. This illustrates a great principle in God's government, showing both that God means to encourage intercession for others, and that in order to pray acceptably, persons must stand in favour before God--in a position which does not demand his rebuke, but which does at least justify manifestations of his favour. It is on this principle that God can and will hear the prayers of his humble, obedient, trusting children.

The role of a Christian is to be the symbol God’s presence to others, especially to those hurting. We need to do all we can to not be the frail human that we are, and instead to become a person who lovingly cares for others with a love that flows from the Spirit of God within us, and praying for others is one of the many ways we can meet their deepest need. However, in praying for others we need the spirit of God to guide us, for if we do this on our own, we will fail every time to be a person of God, but when we learn to allow the Spirit of God to flow thru us, we will be the gift of God to those who are in need. As an intercessor you will come across many needs, but you will also come across many answered prayers, and this will puts you in a unique position to testify to God’s goodness.

Praying for others is vital to our own spiritual growth. Prayer creates a bond of union between our souls and the souls of those whom we love. Let one pray for others till he prevails; it results in a wonderful sympathy, like that between parent and child. To pray for others, and to be heard and answered of God in our prayer, serves greatly to increase our love to God in the form of affection, and our love to man in the form of benevolence. No one ever prayed for another, with real prayer, without feeling an increase of love towards that person, no matter whether it be for a stranger or an acquaintance.

God knows the needs of all of us. In general, it is best to pray simply.
